We decided to do it a little differently...
Rethinking entrepreneurship education
In any given year millions of entrepreneurs start their own companies. At most universities students are being taught to come up with an amazing business opportunity, to convince investors and hit a home run straight from their school benches. Sometimes even worse, students have to finish their boring curriculum first. Research tells us that this works for only 0,2% of first year start-ups. At Global School for Entrepreneurship we consider it our challenge to educate and facilitate the other 99,8% effectively. This made us rethink entrepreneurship education and solve the puzzle. We decided to do some things a little differently:
- Offer students incubation services from day 1.
Why shouldn’t we use the 4 years they are studying entrepreneurship for the discovery and development of their start-up? At most universities students have to start from scratch in the last part of their studies. We asked ourselves why and decided to gain at least 3 years.
- Design the modules to facilitate their venture creation process.
Why can’t modules be relevant to the entrepreneur from the start? We believe we make studying attractive by simply bringing relevant content at the right time.
- Students shouldn’t be limited to one city.
Why can’t students follow their opportunities and travel Europe’s hottest cities or even the world while they are studying and building their start-ups at the same time? At most universities this is not the case because they have to make their own real estate profitable. Global School for Entrepreneurship doesn’t own real estate and is connected with Get in the Ring, a start-up community with events in over 100 countries and Global School for Entrepreneurship is partner of The Student Hotel, with whom we can offer you the amazing housing solution and facilitate you all over Europe. We will actively connect you as a start-ups to global challenges during your 4 year bachelor program.
- Entrepreneurial people have short attention spans.
Our students are distracted easily. They are curious, and capable to manage multiple social media at the same time. Sitting in a classroom listening to lecturers pouring knowledge over them is boring to them. Knowledge often is not considered relevant and therefore 3 hour lectures are highly ineffective. Why not change that? Every lecturer we have talked to admitted the content of a three hour lecture could be offered in 30 minute videos. Offering the slower students the opportunity to watch and hear the content multiple times without slowing down the faster students. The lecture time can then be used to facilitate the entrepreneurial students with the application of the relevant content.
- Nonpassionate lecturers with irrelevant content are fuel for disengagement.
Entrepreneurship should be taught by experienced entrepreneurs who are also capable to teach others. Not every entrepreneur can explain the obtained success. Prof.dr. Sarasvathy has proven this with her Effectuation research. Therefore entrepreneurs who can’t teach, don’t work for Global School for Entrepreneurship. And nonpassionate people… they are not only by our students considered boring. We strongly believe students don’t study at Global School for Entrepreneurship; it’s the individual lecturers who educate the students. It is all about engaging lecturers who inspire, challenge and help prepare students for the future. Therefore we consider it our most important role to get the content and the lecturers who teach it right. We continuously look for and offer lecturers who students will feel they own their future success to, for the rest of their lives, that’s our ambition and we are committed to live up to that responsibility.
- Every student entrepreneur is unique.
We believe universities have become too big. There are lectures offered to over 300 students at the same time. Students are forced to work together in teams with people they can’t stand and graded as a team. They are solutions to universities to be able to cope with scale of groups; all to create economies of scale. The conveyor belt called education starts to run in September and to some in February where uniqueness of individuals is lost from day one. This made us think. Why can’t we come up with a different approach? We figured it out and now offer each student large scale small scale education. Every group of no more than 30 students has their own personal head coach, a lecturer who will follow the individual students progress in their education program as well as their venture creation process. Students are allowed to found teams of up to 7 students who they want to create their start-up with, they will never be forced into a team formation unless each individual student will benefit, for instance in leadership capability training elements or other group activities designed to build capabilities that require a group formation for the sake of the learning, never for sake of economies of scale. Every student entrepreneur is unique and should be treated as such!
